What is a Mochila Wayuu?
A Mochila Wayuu is a beautifully handwoven shoulder bag crafted by the Wayuu people of La Guajira, Colombia. Each bag is made using a crochet technique passed down for generations, making every piece unique. These bags are more than accessories—they carry the stories, traditions, and artistry of the Wayuu culture.
How long does it take to make a Mochila Wayuu?
The time varies depending on the type of bag. A single-thread Mochila, which has the tightest and most intricate weave a uses a 1mm strand. These bags are the icon of Colombian fashion and can take 30-45 days to complete. A double-thread Mochila, is slightly thicker because the thread is doubled into a 2mm strand. These bags take about 10-20 days to complete. Each one is a labor of love, woven knot by knot.

What’s the difference between single-thread and double-thread Mochilas?
Great question. Single-thread Mochilas have a finer, more intricate weave with vibrant patterns, making them ultra-detailed and soft to the touch. Double-thread Mochilas are slightly thicker and sturdier, with bolder patterns. Both are incredibly durable and made to last—it’s all about personal preference.
How do I care for my Mochila Wayuu?
These bags are meant to be loved and used. You can wash them in cold water on the gentle cycle or hand wash them with mild soap. Avoid hot water and dryers—air drying is best to keep them in perfect shape.
Why are Mochilas Wayuu priced the way they are?
Each bag is handcrafted using a 1mm hook crochet technique — knot by knot, taking days or even weeks to complete. The price reflects the skill, time, and cultural heritage behind every stitch, as well as fair wages for the artisans. LAKA CHAKA is committed to ethical sourcing, ensuring artisans are paid fairly for their incredible work.
Can I wear my Mochila as a crossbody bag?
Yes! The long, handwoven strap allows for comfortable crossbody wear or an over-the-shoulder style. Some people also tie a knot in the strap to shorten it for a different look.
How do I know if the strap length is right for me?
Each Mochila is one of a kind, and that includes its measurements. The bag will hang approximately halfway down the total strap length, meaning if the strap measures 44 inches, the bag will sit around 22 inches from your shoulder. Because each bag is unique, it’s very important to check the specific measurements of the bag before purchasing to ensure the right fit for you.
Do Mochilas stretch over time?
Mochilas are made from high-quality acrylic or cotton fibers, which hold their shape well. Over time, they may soften slightly, but they will not lose their form. In fact, they tend to become even more comfortable with use.
Are Mochilas waterproof?
No, they are not waterproof, but they are highly durable. If your Mochila gets wet, simply let it air dry. The tight weave helps prevent excessive moisture absorption, making them resilient in various weather conditions.
Do purchases support the Wayuu community?
Yes! Every Mochila purchased from LAKA CHAKA directly supports Wayuu artisans. A portion of our profits goes toward monthly food contributions and essential resources for the Jaguapia community. This ensures that your purchase makes a real and continuous impact.
